The 1st ASEAN Cytometry Workshop on Basic Applications of Flow Cytometry was hosted by Stempeutics and the Institute of Medical Research in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The workshop was organized by Dr. Satish Totey, Chief Scientific Officer of Stempeutics, Kuala Lumpur and Awtar Krishan of the University of Miami with the express purpose of training researchers from Malaysia and the neighboring countries in the latest methods for flow cytometric analysis. The lectures and wet labs were conducted at the Stempeutics labs in the Technology Park, Kuala Lumpur from the 26th to 31st of July, 2009.
Following faculty members gave lectures and conducted wet labs:
Drs. Scott Cram, Vincent Shankey, Awtar Krishan and Paul Robinson from the USA.
Dr. Martin Adelman from Switzerland.
Drs. Geoff Osborne and Elizabeth Bernal from Australia.
Drs. Arvinder Singh, Paresh Jain and Gopal Pande from India.
Drs. Vivek Tanvade, Adam Gehringand, Wong Hong Cheong from Singapore.
Dr. Kovit Pattanapanyasat from Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr. Satish Totey, S. Daliwhal, Caroline Jee, Swathi Sunder Raj from Kuala Lumpur.
Their efforts were complemented by 15 technical and the support staff and engineers from Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson and Guava Technologies who made their instruments, technical staff and reagents available for the wet labs.
Forty two students attended labs and lectures and another forty nine students from Malaysia and neighboring countries attended the lectures.
Future plans: An organizing committee has been formed to continue the ASEAN workshops in Flow cytometry. We expect to hold the 2nd ASEAN workshop in Malaysia or Singapore in 2011 and in 2012, Bangkok, Thailand will be the host city.
