Dr. Sumeet Gujral
Dr. Sumeet Gujral is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and an Assistant Officer In-charge of the Hemato-Oncology Laboratory at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. He received his MBBS from PGIMS, Rohtak, India and his MD in Pathology from AIIMS, New Delhi. His interests include oncopathology with a special interest in hematopathology (lymph node and bone marrow), immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry.
Lecture
Immunophenotyping of leukemias - Morphology with cytochemistry (myeloperoxidase and non specific esterase) can diagnose most cases of acute leukemia. However, there remains a significant minority of cases that cannot be definitively diagnosed by these methods. Such cases require immunophenotyping by flow cytometry (FCM). Similarly chronic lymphoproliferative disorders (CLPD) need flow for further characterization. Sub typing of acute leukemias and CLPDs is important, as treatment and prognosis of different types is different. FCM has become a standard and a routine practice for the evaluation of lymphomas and leukemia in most diagnostic laboratories. Immunophenotyping assists in the determination of clonal population, and in the detection of a previously characterized population of cells in a sample for monitoring the disease remission. FCM is also used in PNH diagnosis and CD34 stem cell counts.
