Core Faculty

Mrs. Veena Kapoor

Mrs. Veena Kapoor graduated from the Rajasthan University, India. She joined the American Red Cross, Rockville, MD, USA in 1986, where she was involved in transplantation immunology, tolerance induction and peripheral blood stem cells characterization. She is now Laboratory Manager of the Experimental Transplantation and Immunology Branch Flow Cytometry Lab at the NCI/NIH in Bethesda, MD. She is responsible for management of a multi-instrument basic research core facility serving over 100 NCI investigators. She has working experience in operating a variety of flow cytometry instrumentation (including the FACSVantage SE DiVa cell sorter, FACSAria, BD LSRII, FACScan and FACSCalibur analyzers, Compucyte laser scanning cytometer, NPE analyzer). Her current research interests are in stem cell and telomerase biology.

Lab

Mrs. Kapoor will work with Dr. Telford in presenting a hands-on laboratory aimed at stem and early progenitor cell analysis on the Beckman Coulter/NPE Systems Cell Lab Quanta SC, a bench top flow cytometer specifically modified for stem cell analysis. This system can analyze Hoechst 33342 side population (SP) phenotype stem cells and progenitors, and the laboratory will train participants in murine and/or human cell preparation, analysis and data interpretation. The laboratory will also deal with aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) detection as a phenotype of stem cells and progenitors, using fluorogenic enzyme substrates and the same instrument platform. Extracellular membrane protein markers of stems cells phenotype will also be discussed and possibly demonstrated.
