Dr. Rakesh Singal
Dr. Rakesh Singal obtained his MBBS (1984) and MD (1987) from the University of Delhi. He underwent further postgraduate training in United Kingdom (1989-1992) and obtained MRCP (1990) from the Royal College of Physicians, residency in internal medicine at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland (1992-1994) and fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (1994-1998). He joined LSU Medical Center, Shreveport as Assistant Professor in Medicine in 1998 and as Associate Professor in Medicine at University of Miami in 2003. Dr. Singal's Lab studies the mechanism of methylation mediated gene silencing and the use of methylation changes as a biomarker.
Lecture
This presentation will discuss DNA methylation and its role in gene silencing, apoptosis and carcinogenesis (1, 2). The use of methylation as a diagnostic and prognostic marker for cancer will be discussed. Reactivation of methylated genes by pharmaceutical agents and potential role in cancer treatment will also be discussed.
