Dr. William G. Telford

Dr. William G. Telford obtained his Ph.D. in microbiology from the Michigan State University in 1994 and did his postdoctoral training in immunology at The University of Michigan Medical School. He joined National Cancer Institute, NIH in 1999, and at present is Director of the flow cytometry core laboratory in the NCI Experimental Transplantation and Immunology Branch. Dr. Telford's research interests are in integration of: novel solid-state lasers into flow cytometers, stem cell detection and characterization and apoptosis.

Lecture

Flow cytometry plays a critical role in the identification and characterization of stem cells. In this seminar we will review recent advances in stem cell analysis by flow cytometry, including both traditional and novel cell surface phenotyping approaches; physiological characteristics such as ABC transporter activity using pump-specific efflux probes; and flow cytometric measurement of other stem cell-specific physiological characteristics, including aldehyde dehydrogenase activity. This portion of the talk will be practical in nature, describing both specific laboratory methods and the appropriate instrumentation for detecting these characteristics. The talk will then focus on development of new less expensive flow cytometers for stem cell analysis.
