Professor Uttam Pati, the local host and organizer, welcomed the guests and introduced the International organizer, Professor Awtar Krishan from the University of Miami. Dr. Krishan gave a brief history of the Indo –US workshops which have been established with the express purpose of interfacing Indian researchers with local and international experts in cell analysis. Dr. Arvinder Singh, on behalf of the International Society for Analytical Cytology, described the special provisions made for enrolling Indian researchers in the society. Dr. Arbinda Mitra, Director of the Indo-US Technology Forum presented an overview of the collaborative program and the support available for fostering interactions in biotechnology. The key note address was presented by Dr. N.K Ganguly, Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research, who traced the history of flow cytometry in Indian biomedical environment.
Following the inauguration, Drs. Mike Ormerod, Neeta Singh and Charles Goolsby presented an overview of the three main topics of proliferation, apoptosis and signal transduction. In the following session, Drs. Scot Cram, Sudhir Chandana and Martin Adelmann reviewed the three technologies of flow cytometry, single cell gel electrophoresis and cytokine bead assays.
The session on Apoptosis was presented by Drs. Ashok Khar, Kumar Somasundaram and Alok Dhawan who discussed apoptosis in immune response, chemoresistance and toxicology, respectively. Evening reception attended by faculty and students was hosted by DAKO, Inc.
On the second day (February 11, 2007), Drs. Robert Baldera, Sudhir Krishna and Charles Goolsby covered different aspects of protein phosphorylation and signal transduction. In the session on phenotype analysis, lectures were presented by Drs. Sharmila Barve, Sumeet Gujral and Sita Naik. In the afternoon sessions on stem cell analysis, Drs. H. Krishnamurthy, William Tellford and Vivek Tanavde presented their data and reviewed the different methods used for study of stem cells. Dr. Sen Pathak, Subrata Sinha and Padma Sastry covered different aspects of apoptosis in relation to telomere dynamics, therapeutic response and ROS. The evening reception was hosted by Guava Technologies which included exotic dancing by a Rajasthani group, a Charlie Chaplin masquerader and some of our own attendees without masks.
The third day (February 12, 2007) sessions had lectures on Marker expression, gene regulation and Genomics. Dr. Lissy Krishnan, Sujata Iyer and Vincent Shankey presented work on activation markers, bead arrays for analyte quantitation and Zap-70.
The session on gene regulation had lectures by Drs. Rakesh Singal, P. Kondaiah and Suman Dhar. Drs. Scot Cram and Rajinder Kaul gave lectures on Chromosome sorting for genomics and structural variations in genomes. The afternoon was devoted to technical presentations on instrumentation by DAKO, Becton Dickinson, Beckman Coulter and Guava Technologies. Evening reception was hosted by BD Biosciences with a musical presentation and dancing.
On the fourth day (February 13, 2007), Drs. Gopal Kundu and Madhu Dikshit presented talks on osteopontin and Nitric oxide mediated signaling. In the afternoon, six panel discussions on cell cycle and proliferation, apoptosis, signal transduction, phenotype analysis, stem cells and DNA damage and repair were held. Evening reception was hosted by Beckman Coulter accompanied by music and dancing.
Dr. Paresh Jain presented a talk on “what can go wrong in flow analysis”. Students were encouraged to meet individually or in groups with different faculty members to discuss their projects and seek advice.
The graduation ceremony was presided over by JNU Vice Chancellor, V.N. Rjasekharanpillai, who gave a brief talk and presented graduation certificates. A valedictory lecture by Panjab University Vice Chancellor, Professor Ranbir C. Sobti, followed the graduation ceremony.
Besides lectures from the podium, tutorials and wet workshops held at JNU, instruments located in two other neighboring institutions (ICGBS and AIIMS) were used for the wet labs. Flow analyzers and sorters available for the wet labs were from Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson, DAKO and Guava.
